In this video series, I work with Brooklyn, a 4-year-old, 15.3hh warmblood mare who featured in my 'Horse Starting Series' in 2023, teaching her to jump for the first time.
When teaching a horse to jump for the first time, make sure to keep the jumps well below knee height. That way if the horse stops, you are able to just treat the jump like an obstacle. Asking the horse to jump too high, before they have learnt how to stay straight and keep their rhythm, will result in tension and will effect their future performance and the height they eventually make it to.
