Learning to Lead Better

Learning to Lead Better

My young horses get very little handling as foals, other than to trim their feet every six weeks and worm them twice a year. If they are a little shy to catch they don't often get caught to change paddocks, but rather follow behind the rest of the herd.

For this reason, and because of not always having enough time, my young horses can sometimes be a little average to lead when they finally come in to start their training journey. While Rivetti has always been very friendly, due to a lack of handling and training, he can sometimes sit on the end of the rope. This is very easily remedied within a session or two by using the method above and by teaching them how to lunge and hind quarter yield (which teaches them how to follow the 'feel').
