Teaching your horse to trot beside your shoulder is a great skill as it prepares them for future trot-ups, vet checks and it also helps them to lead better and stay at your shoulder.
I try to do 1-3 sessions with my youngsters (until they are relaxing and understand the question fully) prior to starting them under saddle.
